Jared Hemley had a mission. He was home from school due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was bored. Brandon Systems was disposing of old high end servers not needed as the company transitioned computing to the cloud.
He saw a very high powered data center server in a garbage pile. To the team at Brandon this was garbage, but to Jared it was an opportunity to help the fight against COVID-19. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics. Jared reconfigured the server, added new memory, software, etc and placed the server in operation connected to Folding@Home.
Jared noted – “The server operates at 80% utilization. If you have spare data center computing power – lend it to F@H.
